Adobe Premiere Pro 2023: The Best New Features for Editors
While 2023 didn’t bring a complete UI overhaul, Adobe focused on what matters most: speed, stability, and eliminating repetitive tasks. If you’re still on an older version, these four features alone will save you hours.
7. Faster Performance & GPU Acceleration
Adobe rewrote key parts of the renderer. Effects like Lumetri Color, Ultra Key, and VR effects are now almost entirely GPU-accelerated. On Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3), exports are up to 3x faster than the 2022 version. Timeline scrubbing with 4K H.265 footage is noticeably smoother without proxies.
5. Audio Improvements
Audio mixing received specific attention in the mid-2023 updates to streamline the final mix process.
- Remix (Powered by Adobe Sensei): Similar to the feature in Adobe Audition, Premiere Pro can now "Remix" music tracks. Editors can specify a target duration, and the AI will intelligently restructure the song to fit the time constraint, adding beats and rearranging verses while maintaining musicality.
- Dialog Isolation: A new audio effect that uses machine learning to isolate spoken dialogue from background noise. While not a replacement for professional tools like iZotope RX, it provides an effective "first pass" cleanup for field recordings.
Remix (Powered by Adobe Sensei)
A revolutionary tool for music editing.
- Function: Editors can take a music track and type in a desired duration (e.g., shorten a 4-minute song to 30 seconds). The AI analyzes the track and remixes it seamlessly, rearranging intro/outro sections to match the new duration naturally.
- Impact: Eliminates the awkward "hard cut" or fade-out when adjusting background music to fit video length.
The Properties Panel (Replaces "Effects Controls" for many tasks)
Adobe introduced a dynamic Properties Panel. Instead of hunting through menus, simply select a clip, and the Properties panel shows you everything relevant: volume, speed, color temperature, and even proxy status. If you select a shape graphic, it shows fill and stroke. If you select an audio clip, it shows dialogue leveling. It contextually adapts to your selection, reducing clicks by roughly 40%.
Frame.io Integration (Version 2.0)
Frame.io is now deeply integrated directly into the Premiere Pro interface (no separate plugin required).
- Built-in Review: Editors can share a timeline link with clients/stakeholders. Clients can leave time-coded comments directly in the browser, which appear as markers inside Premiere Pro.
- Version Control: Users can manage versions of cuts within the panel, comparing previous iterations side-by-side.
