Back home, in his small, cluttered room, Iqbal rubs the lamp against the wall. The screen flashes. Smoke (cheap but effective PTV special effects) billows from the lamp. Out pops Ainak Wala Jin.
Played by the legendary Jawaid Sheikh, the genie is unlike any seen before. He doesn't have a turban or a long beard. He wears thick, round spectacles (the "ainak"), a shabby shalwar kameez, and a red waistcoat. He is short, stout, and hilariously awkward.
His first dialogue is iconic: “Kya haal hain?” (How are you?) – delivered with a lazy, friendly swagger. Iqbal screams. The genie calms him down, explaining that unlike traditional genies who need to be inside lamps, he prefers to live behind the wall.
Unlike modern kids' shows that resolve everything in 22 minutes, Ainak Wala Jin Episode 1 ends on a cliffhanger. The Genie realizes his magic is erratic because his "Concentration Caps" (a subwoofer-like device attached to his turban) is broken. To fix it, he needs a specific battery sold only in the "Market of Lost Things," a dimension accessible via the family’s broken water heater.
Meanwhile, the neighborhood bully, Gullu, catches a glimpse of the Genie through the window. Episode 1 closes with Gullu plotting to steal the lamp, setting up the primary antagonist arc.
Rewatching Ainak Wala Jin Episode 1 as an adult is a surreal experience. The strings are visible, the jokes are pun-drenched, and the special effects are laughable by today's standards. Yet, the heart is unmistakable.
The episode is a time capsule of 1990s Pakistani society: a time of simplicity, joint family systems, and analog joys. It honors the memory of Farooq Qaiser (Uncle Sargam), the genius who voiced the Genie and taught an entire generation that intelligence is cool (hence the glasses) and that laughter is the best magic.
