By E. M. Arden
Twelve-year-old Mira had lived her whole life in the shadow of the Puffin Point Lighthouse. Every evening, she watched her father climb the winding stairs to light the great lamp. Every morning, she watched him descend, eyes red from the night watch.
“Why can’t I come up with you?” she asked for the hundredth time.
Her father’s answer was always the same: “When you’re older, Mira. The lighthouse is my duty. Not yours.” Cambridge Checkpoint English Coursebook 7 Pdf Free
But Mira had noticed things. The way he locked the door at the base of the tower. The strange brass key he wore around his neck, even in his sleep. The way the beam seemed to flicker – not with faulty wiring, but with purpose, as if it were signalling something far out at sea.
One stormy October night, her father forgot to lock the door.
Mira found it ajar, the key still dangling from the lock. Rain lashed against the cottage windows. Thunder rattled the teacups in the cupboard. She knew she should wake him. Instead, she pulled the key free, slipped through the door, and began to climb.
The stone steps were cold and wet. The wind howled through slits in the wall. Higher and higher she climbed, past old oil cans and coiled ropes, past a dusty logbook written in a language she didn’t recognise.
At the top, the lamp room blazed with light. But the lamp wasn’t an electric bulb. It was a crystal – a huge, faceted gem that spun slowly on a brass pedestal. And inside the crystal, trapped like a fly in amber, was a creature.
It had the shape of a man, but its skin was pale blue. Its eyes were closed. Its hands were pressed against the inside of the crystal as if trying to push free.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
Mira spun around. Her father stood in the doorway, his face pale.
“Dad… what is that?”
He sighed – a long, heavy sound. “His name is Corin. He’s a sea spirit. Twenty years ago, he saved my life when my boat capsized. But in saving me, he broke the ancient law of his kind. The price was his freedom.”
“So you trapped him?”
“I didn’t trap him,” her father said sharply. “The Council of Tides did. They encased him in that crystal and gave me a choice: guard him for one lifetime, or let the sea swallow our village. Every night, I turn the crystal. Every night, he dreams of the ocean. And every night, the sea is calm.”
Mira stared at the trapped spirit. One of Corin’s eyes opened. It was deep green, like seaweed in sunlight. He didn’t look angry. He looked tired.
“There has to be another way,” Mira whispered.
“There isn’t.”
But Mira had read the old logbook. She had seen the diagrams. She took a breath and said, “What if I take your place?”
Her father’s face crumpled. “No. Absolutely not.”
“Not forever,” she said quickly. “Just… one night. While you find the Council. While you bargain for his release.” While full, current versions of the Cambridge Checkpoint
Rain hammered the glass. The crystal flickered. Corin’s second eye opened.
And for the first time in twenty years, the sea spirit smiled.
