Understanding PSX ROMs
PSX ROMs refer to digital copies of games originally released on the PlayStation console, which was later renamed to PSOne. These ROMs are essentially dumps of the game data from the cartridges or CDs, which can then be played on a computer using an emulator.
Action & Survival Horror (Best for High-Fidelity Emulation)
6. Metal Gear Solid (Discs 1-2)
- Why it’s top: The stealth genre’s crowning jewel. CHD ensures the Psycho Mantis fight (which requires virtual memory card swapping) works seamlessly.
7. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
- Why it’s top: The metroidvania blueprint. The CHD version preserves the infamous voice acting ("What is a man?") and the inverted castle.
8. Resident Evil 2 (Discs 1-2)
- Why it’s top: Dual scenarios (Leon/Claire). With CHD, you can easily switch discs inside RetroArch without crashing—a common issue with loose BIN files.
9. Silent Hill
- Why it’s top: Atmospheric horror at its peak. The fog effects (used to hide hardware limitations) look incredible when upscaled to 1080p.
10. Tomb Raider (1996)
- Why it’s top: Lara Croft’s polygonal debut. CHD reduces loading times slightly because the compressed data is faster to read on SSD/SD cards.
2. File Management (One File vs. Many)
If you are a collector, you know the pain of organizing BIN/CUE files. Multi-track games (common in PSX games with CD audio) often split into multiple .bin files accompanied by a single .cue sheet.
- BIN/CUE: A folder for one game might look like:
Game.cue,Game (Track 1).bin,Game (Track 2).bin... up toGame (Track 30).bin. - CHD: All of those tracks are merged into one single file:
Game.chd.
This makes organizing, moving, and scraping metadata (box art) significantly easier.
3. Avoid "CHD Rev 2" confusion
Older emulators need CHD v4 or v5. Modern DuckStation works with both. If a CHD fails, convert it again with latest chdman.
