La tensión estalla durante un incidente con los chicos mayores del vecindario (los adolescentes que los atormentan). Durante una situación peligrosa en Halloween (donde son obligados a cantar para niños más pequeños), Greg decide defender a Rowley a pesar de sus diferencias.
Más tarde, en el patio de la escuela, los matones obligan a Rowley a comerse el queso mohoso. Greg, en un acto inusual de lealtad (o quizás para evitar que Rowley se convierta en un paria total), miente y dice que él tiró el queso, asumiendo la culpa. Aunque los niños piensan que Greg tiene "El Queso", él se da cuenta de que su amistad con Rowley es más importante que su reputación. Finalmente, terminan el año escolar de vuelta como amigos, aunque Greg sigue siendo el mismo chico algo cínico y perezoso de siempre.
Greg Heffley es un chico normal que se enfrenta a los peligros y la incomodidad de la secundaria (middle school). Su madre le obliga a escribir en un diario para que "llegue a ser famoso" y la gente pueda leer sobre su vida antes de que lo sea. Greg acepta de mala gana, advirtiendo al lector que no espere grandes aventuras, sino la cruda realidad de su día a día.
