PKG Basics
- PKG files can contain full games, DLC, updates, or installer packages.
- Official PKG files are signed and installable on unmodified PS3 systems via XMB (Cross Media Bar) or through PSN.
- Unsigned PKGs require a modified PS3 (CFW) or HEN (Homebrew ENabler) on newer firmwares to install.
- Two main contexts:
- Official/Store PKG: From PlayStation Network, signed, installs on retail PS3.
- Homebrew/Unsigned PKG: Requires modded PS3 (CFW/HEN).
Installing Jet Set Radio PKG on Retail PS3 (Official)
- Ensure your PS3 is connected to the internet and updated to the firmware required by the PKG (if applicable).
- If the PKG is an official PSN package distributed to you (e.g., via PSN content download on PC), copy the PKG to a USB drive formatted FAT32/exFAT.
- Plug the USB drive into PS3.
- On XMB, go to the Game column. If the package is official and signed, PS3 should detect and show the content under notifications or the Purchased/Downloaded section; otherwise, use the install process provided by PSN.
- For official installs, follow on-screen prompts; the PS3 will verify signatures and install to the HDD.
Note: Retail consoles will refuse unsigned packages; attempting to force them will fail without modding.
