After the Communist coup of 1948, the western border with West Germany became a lethal no-man’s land. Hundreds tried to flee across the forests. Some were shot by border patrols. Others… simply vanished. The hunters were told these were “accidental disappearances.”
Jan Krkavec Dvořák was the best tracker among them. In films like The Silence of the Hercynian Forest (1957), he played a gamekeeper who refuses to betray a fugitive. Audiences wept. What they didn’t know: three years earlier, Jan had followed a family’s footprints for seven kilometers through frozen marsh. A father, a mother, a girl of six. He found them hiding in an abandoned mill. He did not report them. Instead, he pointed west and whispered, “One hour until the patrol changes. Run.”

The notebook now rests in the Czech National Museum’s collection of everyday life under totalitarianism. A note in the curator’s file reads: “Unknown whether the list refers to animals or men. The hunters themselves refused to clarify.”
