Middle-earth: Shadow of War Definitive Edition - What's included

Middle-earth: Shadow of War Definitive Edition is the most complete version of the 2017 sequel to Shadow of Mordor. It brings together the base game, all major expansions, and several significant free updates that drastically improved the experience—most notably the complete removal of microtransactions and the loot box "Market". What’s Included?

The Definitive Edition bundles the core experience with four major expansions: Story Expansions: Blade of Galadriel

: You play as the elven assassin Eltariel, using new light-based combat abilities to hunt the Nazgûl. Desolation of Mordor

: You control Baranor, a human Captain of Minas Ithil, in a roguelike-style mode. Unlike the main game, death is permanent (though you keep experience), and you use gadgets and mercenaries instead of wraith powers. Nemesis Expansions: Slaughter Tribe Outlaw Tribe

: These add new Orc tribes to the main game, featuring unique missions, followers with new abilities, and legendary gear sets. Key Gameplay Features The Nemesis System Still Shines No other game

The Nemesis System: The series' standout feature is expanded here. Orc captains remember your previous encounters, develop grudges, and can even cheat death to return for revenge.

Siege Warfare: A major addition where you build your own Orc army to conquer and defend massive fortresses across different regions.

Updated Post-Game: The initial launch was criticized for a "grindy" final act known as the Shadow Wars. The Definitive Edition includes a streamlined version of this epilogue with new narration and rewards.

Level Caps & Gear: The level cap for followers is raised to 80 (85 for enemies), and you can now upgrade gear to your current level. Where to Buy

The Nemesis System Still Shines

No other game (not even Warner Bros.’ own Wonder Woman announcement) has matched the emergent storytelling of the Nemesis System. Orcs remember you. They cheat death, flee, ambush you, and develop grudges. In one playthrough, a cowardly archer named “Hosh the Runner” killed me, became an Overlord, then betrayed me twice. I still remember his name.

In 2026, this is still unique. No other game generates such personal villains automatically.

Best DLC: Desolation of Mordor

While Blade of Galadriel is linear and skippable, Desolation is a hidden gem. You play as Baranor, a human who can’t dominate orcs. Instead, you rely on gadgets, mercenaries, and a strict permadeath-lite system. It turns Shadow of War into a tense, fast-paced roguelite. If you own the Definitive Edition, do not skip this.

Performance and Visuals

Playing the Definitive Edition on PS5, Xbox Series X, or a high-end PC via 4K patches is a treat. While the game did not receive a "next-gen" patch per se, the frame rate is unlocked. You can expect a solid 60fps in 4K on modern consoles.

Mordor looks stunning. From the chemical factories of Gorgoroth to the lush jungles of Nurn, the art direction holds up beautifully. The Definitive Edition usually goes on sale for $14.99 - $19.99, which for this amount of content is a robbery in the Shire.

What is the Definitive Edition?

For the uninitiated, the Definitive Edition bundles the base game with all post-launch DLC and, most importantly, removes the microtransactions entirely. Released by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, this version collects:

  • The Base Game: The full campaign following Talion and Celebrimbor.
  • The Slaughter Tribe Nemesis Expansion: Adds a new tribe of brutal, cannibalistic Orcs.
  • The Outlaw Tribe Nemesis Expansion: Adds a rebel tribe who fights for themselves.
  • The Blade of Galadriel Story DLC: Play as Eltariel, a Nazgûl-hunting assassin.
  • The Desolation of Mordor Story DLC: Play as Baranor, a human soldier with Batman-like gadgets.

Crucially, the Definitive Edition rebalances the entire economy of the game. The real-money market is completely gutted, making the Nemesis System pure again.
