Film ini terinspirasi dari puisi epik "Padmavat" karya Malik Muhammad Jayasi, meskipun tidak sepenuhnya akurat secara historis.

Cerita berpusat pada Rani Padmavati, seorang putri Kerajaan Singhal (sekarang Sri Lanka) yang dikenal karena kecantikannya yang legendaris dan kebijaksanaannya. Ia menikah dengan Maharawal Ratan Singh, penguasa Kerajaan Mewar di Chittorgarh.

Namun, kabar tentang kecantikan Padmavati sampai ke telinga Sultan Alauddin Khilji, penguasa Kesultanan Delhi yang kejam dan ambisius. Terobsesi untuk memiliki Padmavati, Khilji menyerang Chittorgarh. Alih-alih menyerah, Rani Padmavati dan para wanita kerajaan memilih jalan kehormatan terakhir: Jauhar (pembakaran diri massal) untuk melindungi kehormatan mereka dari keinginan Khilji yang haus kekuasaan.
