Set against the backdrop of postwar Germany, The Reader follows Michael Berg (Ralph Fiennes as an adult, David Kross as a teenager). As a sickly 15-year-old in 1958, he begins a clandestine affair with Hanna Schmitz (Kate Winslet), an enigmatic, much older tram conductor. Their relationship revolves around Michael reading literary classics aloud to her before they make love.
Years later, Michael is a law student observing Nazi war crime trials. To his shock, Hanna is in the dock. She is accused of a heinous act as an SS guard. But Hanna harbors a secret more damning than her wartime past — one that forces Michael into a lifelong moral reckoning.
