Definition and Prevalence
- Varicocele is essentially a swelling of the veins that drain the testicle. It's a condition more commonly diagnosed in adolescents and adults but can be identified in prepubertal boys as well.
- Prevalence: Varicoceles are found in about 15% of boys and adolescents, usually becoming apparent during puberty.
Indications for Surgery
In 1982, indications for operation in a child were stricter than they are today. Surgery was generally recommended for:
- Symptomatic Varicocele: Significant pain or discomfort.
- Testicular Atrophy: Documented disparity in testicular size (usually >2-3 ml difference).
- Bilateral Varicocele: Though rare, this was an automatic indication for repair.
Controversy: Asymptomatic boys with normal testicular size were often managed conservatively ("watchful waiting") to see if the varicocele would resolve or if atrophy would develop later. varikotsele u detey 1982
