| Setting | Value | Why? | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Renderer | Vulkan (or OpenGL if Vulkan unstable) | Handles the thin lines best. | | Resolution | 1x Native (320x240) | Do not upscale. Vib-Ribbon uses sub-pixel line art. Upscaling to 4K breaks the collision detection visually. | | PGXP | On (Memory Only) | Stabilizes vertex positions. | | PGXP Culling | Off | Prevents missing lines on the rabbit’s ears. | | Texture Filtering | Nearest Neighbor (No filtering) | Bilinear filtering blurs the sharp vectors. | | True Color Rendering | On | Prevents color banding on the neon trails. |
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Problem: The rabbit turns into a tangled mess of flickering lines. Fix: Turn OFF "Adaptive Smoothing" in the Graphics settings. Turn ON "Disable Interlacing." vib ribbon duckstation
Problem: The notes (blocks) appear a full second before the beat. Fix: You have audio latency. Go to Settings > Audio > Backend and switch to XAudio2 (Windows) or Cubeb (Linux). Lower the Buffer Size to 64ms. Vib-Ribbon and DuckStation: An Analytical Essay Graphics Tab
Problem: Game crashes when you finish Level 3.
Fix: This is a corrupted ROM. You need the Vib-Ribbon (Japan) (Rev 1).bin with MD5 07b9f62a5b1b0d9f5a1e3c2d4e6f8a9b. The original dump had a bad sector. Up: Jump (over loops) Down: Duck (under low
Step 4: Controller Configuration for Precision
Vib Ribbon uses only three buttons (Up, Down, and Circle), but timing is everything.
- Up: Jump (over loops)
- Down: Duck (under low bars)
- Circle: Attack (Zapper squares)
Troubleshooting: "No Disc" or Black Screen?
- Issue: DuckStation says "Insert PlayStation CD-ROM."
- Fix: You need a copy of Vib Ribbon (
.cue+.bin). The game does not work with.chdcompression due to the CD audio tracks. - Fix 2: Ensure your BIOS (
scph5501.binfor US,scph5500.binfor Japan) is correctly pathed. Vib Ribbon was JP/PAL only – usescph5500.binfor the original Japanese release.
Step 2: Critical DuckStation Settings
Open DuckStation, right-click Vib-Ribbon > Properties.
1. Why DuckStation over ePSXe or Beetle PSX?
- No Polygon Jitter: Vib Ribbon’s vector graphics remain perfectly straight.
- PGXP Operation Mode: Set to
Memory (Full)– This stabilizes the ribbon and the Vibri character. - Overclocking: Vib Ribbon runs at native 30fps. Overclocking the CPU to 200% removes framerate dips during complex beat sections.
